Powerlifting meets are the heart and soul of the sport. They are where you make your lifts count, meet new friends, and hear the roar of the crowd. Here are 6 powerlifting meets in Singapore you can join.Stated price ranges & information are taken from 2019 & 2020. They are subject to change by the meet organisers. Registration usually opens 3 months before the competition and slots run out quickly. Sign up fast to avoid disappointment! PSA: Due to the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19, large-scale events have been postposed. Thus, many of the dates for the 2020 & 2021 competition events will be affected in light of the evolving situation. Stay safe everybody!


1. Tertiary Powerlifting Championship

Approximate Date: mid-January
Federation: Powerlifting Singapore (IPF)
Who can join: Open to all Powerlifting Singapore member students who are currently enrolled in a tertiary institution, or within 1 year after graduation
Available Slots: ~50
Price Range: Membership Fee ~$109, Competition Fee ~$79 

The Tertiary Powerlifting Championships (TPC) aims to promote the powerlifting scene on the tertiary level. This meet is perfect for newbies who wish to experience a IPF-sanctioned competition. All competitors fall within the Open age category and are split into the University and JC-Poly-ITE categories. School teams compete against one another based on a point system to determine the tertiary champions. Modelled after the IPF World University Powerlifting Cup, university teams may use their qualifying totals to compete against other schools on the world stage.


2. Singapore Powerlifting Open

Approximate Date: end March – mid-April
Federation: Powerlifting Singapore (IPF)
Who can join: Open to all Powerlifting Singapore members
Available Slots: ~45 per day, depending on the length of the event
Price Range: Membership Fee ~$109, Competition Fee ~$85

Organised in conjunction with actiFIT Asia, Singapore Powerlifting Open (SPO) is the flagship meet of Powerlifting Singapore. One of the largest meets locally, this meet is sure to see new national records set.

An IPF-sanctioned meet, competitors are highly encouraged to consult the rulebook and list of approved personal equipment. Don’t let a small mistake get you disqualified! As the actiFIT Asia expo spans over 3 days, there is a chance that you may compete on a weekday morning.


3. Singapore Powerlifting Alliance Championship

Approximate Date: early August
Federation: Singapore PowerliftingAlliance (GPA)
Who can join: Open to all
Available Slots: ~120
Price Range: Competition Fee ~$90 (early bird), ~$100

No membership is required to join this friendly and fun meet. That being said, this isn’t a casual meet, so shoot for the sky and some GPA world records. Some notable differences; weigh-ins are 24 hours instead of 2 hours; a deadlift bar is used at this meet, which has more whip compared to other competition bars. Deadlift specialists, time to flex on those sub-total bois.


4. Test of Strength by PowerliftingNUS

Approximate Date: mid-August
Federation: NIL (IPF rules)
Who can join: Open to NUS students, invitationals for non-NUS persons. If you wish to compete but are unsure, please approach powerliftingnus on Instagram or email [email protected]
Available Slots: ~50
Price Range: Competition Fee ~$40 (Powerlifting NUS members), ~$50 (non-members)

Test of Strength (ToS) offers a warm and fun environment for new lifters in the community without the stress of additional requirements such as equipment, weight, etc. The meet is organised annually by PowerliftingNUS to spread awareness of the sport in NUS and other institutions. Competition singlets are optional, and there will be no equipment checks nor formal weigh-in. Participants compete based on Wilks for sponsor prizes that vary from year to year.


5. Singapore Powerlifting invitationals

Who can join: Open to all Powerlifting Singapore members
Available Slots: ~100
Price Range: Membership Fee ~$109, Competition Fee ~$85

Despite the name, Singapore Powerlifting Invitationals (SPI) is open for all to join. The last local IPF meet before the year’s end, you will see faces and regulars from TPC and SPO. It is also the last opportunity for lifters who want to compete in the regional Asian Classic Powerlifting Championships, so get ready to see some tough battles on the platform for a spot on the national team!


6. Chalk & Blood By The Gym Nation

Approximate Date: mid-December
Federation: NIL (IPF rules)
Who can join: Open to all
Available Slots: ~50
Price Range: Competition Fee ~$25

Organized by friends and folks from The Gym Nation (TGN), expect to meet old and new faces alike at The Strength Yard, the adopted event venue. The last meet of the year, invite your friends along to break some PRs at – we quote from the old folks at TGN – “the funnest meet in Singapore”.Competition singlets are optional, and there will be no equipment checks nor formal weigh-in. There is usually a post-meet gathering & dinner at the venue so stick around and mingle.
